Road Traffic Accident 2!

As mentioned 2 entries ago, I witnessed (kinda) a road traffic accident while on a walk. It was during the walk to Kranji MRT station and back, towards Marsiling MRT station.

I was approaching the junction when I saw from my peripheral vision, and heard, a motorcycle coming in from the right (I think!), and then a loud crash. My eyes opened wide and I stood stunned, and said, "Oh my god." I thought I saw the biker being thrown forward.

I then saw a taxi with its front bumper dented quite badly, moving slowly forward. I had also noticed that there was a police car right at the front of the junction. Erm. Okay. I'm guessing they missed the change in traffic lights, rather than they were parked there for fun, but it was quite a coincident that an accident happened right where a police car was at. I mean, look at the photo below.

The bike ended up beside the police car! Ok, me writing "police ass" there was a bit inappropriate, but the picture was taken just as he bent over to pick something out of his car. It wasn't like I purposely waited for this moment to snap it or anything... Really. Anyway, moving on.

Those were the legs of the accident victim, circled. He was kinda lucky that he landed between those electric boxes, otherwise, he might have suffered even worse injuries from hitting the boxes.

The victim was a Malay guy, and during my lingering stay there, I noticed he was conscious, so that was a good thing... I saw tears in his clothes, but no blood. I'm not sure if that was a good thing, 'cause he might have had internal bleeding. I found some things weird with this accident, though :

  • If what I thought I saw was right, then the motorcycle was from the right... (From the bottom of the picture, if you refer below.) So... How did the motorbike and himself end up on the lane of the ongoing traffic? Was he from the road parallel to where I was?
  • The taxi's front bumper was damaged. I'm not sure where the taxi was from, but if the front bumper was damaged, I'm guessing he must've been turning right from Woodlands Avenue 3? Or he could've been from Woodlands Avenue 1, going straight. I only saw the left side of the front bumper damaged, but that was because I never managed to see the right and front side.

  • There were glass and metal bits all over the road in front of the police car. I'm guessing that that was near the point of impact. But that's a bit too close to the lane where the police car was... That means the taxi must've been turning right, instead of going straight, yes? Otherwise, the point of impact would have been closer to the lane beside the police car's lane.

I lingered for a few minutes, and within that few minutes, the SCDF ambulance arrived. The timestamps on my photographs showed the first picture taken at 11:08 pm, and the ambulance arriving at 11:12 pm. Less than 5 minutes response time! I'm impressed! Good job, SCDF!

Here's a video of the scene after the accident.

What I think happened... Maybe... Is the taxi was turning right from Woodlands Avenue 3, into Woodlands Centre Road, and the motorbike was speeding from the road parallel to me (meaning, I must have mistakenly thought he was from Woodlands Avenue 1), and they met near the middle of the junction, where the bike and the biker were thrown towards Woodlands Centre Road.

Another scenario I was thinking, although it sounds rather weird, was that both the vehicles were turning right at the same time and met in the middle. This would explain why the motorcycle ended up in the police car's lane, I think. This scenario would mean that the traffic light for the Woodlands Avenue 1 lanes would have to be green and thus, the light for the adjacent lanes would be red. If so, that would mean the taxi was trying to catch the turn signal, and the biker was assuming the green light would go off when he reached the junction. This sounds very implausible 'cause the police car should have moved with the green light too. Unless the driver's response time is a bit slow. Or the green light really hadn't changed yet. Or there was a vehicle in front of the police car which went off first (which would be impossible since in this scenario the taxi was trying to catch the turn signal). Or the police car was really just parked there. Also, this scenario sounds implausible because it would mean both the taxi driver and motorcyclist were morons for driving so recklessly. Well, okay, maybe not so implausible for that last bit.

But then again, I'm very rusty with my RTA scenarios and I've been wrong before. What do you think caused this accident and allowed the motorcycle and motorcyclist to end up in that position? (Did this accident manage to make the news? I don't read/watch/listen to the news anymore. Haha.)
