Dissatisfactions With UniSIM - Part 4

Is ranting like this really helping? Ehhh, not so much. I figure if these posts do get on Google (the way some of my posts appear to be), it might help some future student-to-be decide if UniSIM is really the way to go. Granted, this is quite a one-sided look at UniSIM's standard, but it's still a valid view.

I've had some good lecturers so far too, like (as mentioned in the postscript of the email in my previous entry) Dr Phil, who taught Discrete Mathematics and Further Discrete Mathematics. I seem to recall being pissed at him when I was taking those modules too, but never at the same level as how pissed I am now with the two lecturers I've mentioned in this string of entries. Dr Phil was structured (the way the Graphics Design lecturer isn't) and he actually tried to inject humour into his lessons. Sure it was nerdy humour, and not a lot of people can appreciate that, but I found him rather funny!

And there was Mr Satish Khattar too, of course, who was a superb lecturer, or rather, a facilitator as he called himself. He treated his students as friends and equals rather than... Well, students. And he made the module he was teaching, Introduction To Media Communication, highly enjoyable. Plus, I did really well in this module, so that was another reason why I liked him. Haha. =P

So, out of the 8 modules that I've taken so far, only 2 of the lecturers are good? That's not such a good track record for UniSIM, is it? Arguably, only by my standards, anyway. I'd say probably 2 of the other lecturers were average, while the others were really crap.

The previous lecturers are not who I want to blog about though. Here's the reply from the Fundamentals Of Graphics Design lecturer to my email.

Dear Zulkifly,

Your feedback and suggestions are noted.

You should have told me earlier (your marks will be not affected). For MTD203, feel free to give suggestions that help me to help you learn better.

Thank you very much.

regards,
Mdm xxx

I had sent the email posted in the previous entry during the tea break of the last class for Fundamentals Of Graphics Design (MTD201), so I won't know if she is actually going to change until Advanced Graphics Design (MTD203) module starts in about a week's time. But my first reaction after reading her reply was annoyance at her line saying I "should have told" her "earlier". Is she trying to put some blame on me? I was doubly annoyed by that line because the Head Of Programme used it in his reply to me (I will be posting the exchange with him in the next entry) as well! I understand the reasoning behind that line, but they need to rephrase it to sound less accusatory!

After seething a while, I finally decided to reply to her reply.

Dear Madam xxx,

I would have told you earlier, but I needed time to collect my thoughts and confer with my classmates. I only decided to draft this email when I realised that I was not alone in my frustration.

Regards,

Zul

These people really need to put themselves in the students' shoes. There are only 6 seminars for one module. We take 2 seminars to really understand the new lecturer's teaching style, and then another seminar or 2 to draft a proper email. How soon can we feedback? We can't possibly fire with no ammunition! And if they want us to feedback during the lesson itself, (as one of my classmates said to me) it would be a bit disrespectful, and in my opinion, very disruptive.

I suppose we could've acted sooner, but there's also this thing called giving someone a chance, yeah? If we act on every move we found disagreeable, then we'd be focusing on the lecturers instead of the knowledge the lecturers are supposed to impart.

As mentioned above, the next entry (and most probably the entry after that, depending on the length) will be on the email exchange between me and the Head Of Programme for the Multimedia Technology & Design course, regarding the change of lecturers for the upcoming Video Technology module.
